Keeping Your Pets Safe During Thanksgiving: Foods to Avoid

Keeping Your Pets Safe During Thanksgiving: Foods to Avoid
November 3, 2024

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and delicious feasts, but while you’re enjoying your holiday meal, it’s important to remember that many of the foods we love can be harmful to our pets. At Healthy Pets of Ohio, we want to help you keep your furry companions safe during the holiday season by offering a few tips on which Thanksgiving foods to avoid sharing with your pets.

One of the most common hazards for pets on Thanksgiving is turkey bones. Although it might seem harmless to toss your dog or cat a bone from your turkey dinner, cooked bones can easily splinter and cause choking, digestive blockages, or even internal injuries. Instead, opt for pet-friendly treats to ensure they can enjoy a safe snack while you enjoy your meal.

Another major food to avoid is anything containing chocolate, onions, or garlic. Many desserts and side dishes, such as stuffing and casseroles, may contain these ingredients, which are toxic to both dogs and cats. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can lead to serious health problems like vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures. Onions and garlic, commonly found in holiday dishes, can damage your pet’s red blood cells and cause anemia.

Mashed potatoes, a Thanksgiving staple, might seem like a harmless snack, but be cautious if they contain added butter, cream, or seasoning. High-fat foods can lead to pancreatitis in pets, and excess salt or seasonings can upset their digestive system. If you want to share a bit of your Thanksgiving meal with your pet, plain cooked vegetables like carrots or green beans are a safer option.

Finally, be mindful of sugary desserts and alcohol. While it’s obvious that alcohol is dangerous for pets, many people forget that desserts with artificial sweeteners, like xylitol, can be just as harmful. Xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver failure in dogs, even in small amounts.

At Healthy Pets of Ohio, we know how much you care about your pets, and with a little extra caution, you can make sure they enjoy a safe and happy Thanksgiving alongside the family. If you have any concerns or questions about pet safety this holiday season, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team of veterinarians.
